Top 10 RV Personalization Ideas
Welcome to the Top 10 of how we have personalized our travel trailer.
When you get a new, or new to you, rig, the first thing is nesting! You want to make it your home on wheels. I LOVE organizing! I know that's weird, but it makes me feel almost as good as tiki music and a couple cocktails.
Here are the Top 10 things we did to personalize our happy mobile home!
1. We REMOVED the Massive Decals from the Front and Sides of the TrailerIt was very important to me to tone down the free marketing on this trailer. Decommodification. Since it was new, the decals hadn't yet molded to the trailer, so the removal was fairly easy. We did keep a few that weren't so in your face "THIS IS A WOLFPUP!" The ones that were difficult, we used Goo Gone to clean it up. Worked like a charm.
I even have a pile of organizing items in the garage. I rotate the items depending on what we need for the trip. This pile includes a lot of collapsible items and hanging storage.
2. I Organized the Space Quick AF!
From tension rods and command hooks, to bins, buckets and boxes and racks, oh my! Throw in a couple lazy susans and stacking dry good storage and start calling yourself a damn expert! If you too are an organizing freak and you travel with someone, I highly recommend explaining to them where everything goes, otherwise they will do their own thing and unintentionally ruin your day.
3. Purchased Our Own Tools and Supplies
Some RV dealerships set you up with a package to drive off the lot, ready to go on your first trip. But they charge you for it. Negotiate that shit for free! Because the bundle they give you is cheap AF. Save the money for the things you really want. Things like a bubble level, chocks, leveling blocks, a sewer hose and connections, water hoses (one for sewer and one for drinking), a water filter, etc. We also got a tool kit that STAYS in the trailer.
4. Upgrades
We upgraded a lot of things on the trailer, but here is a list of our Top 10 Upgrades. Before upgrading your rig, I recommend getting some miles under your belt (just a trip or two) to determine what you feel will be the most important items to give you the comfort you are looking for. We decided we needed more power storage and extra propane for dry camping (boondocking). Our bathroom didn't come with any vanity, so I added a full length mirror using Command Velcro Picture Hanging Strips.
5. Added Pictures and Stickers
We loved the idea of getting US stickers, but wanted something more us. So, we get a goofy sticker wherever we take the trailer and slap it to wall space over the bed. The space isn't really good for anything else, especially if you get claustrophobic. I also have some family photos that I stuck up on the walls with washi tape. Shockingly, it's still sticking. Thanks, Pinterest! I found a fun little tool that's great for posters in Spawn's bed area.
6. Lighting: Inside and Out
Sometimes the bright white LEDs are a bit much. Having a very soft warm light at the end of the evening feels more inviting and like home. Grabbing a light with multiple uses is a plus. Ours has some USB ports on it, with an LED bulb, so it uses very little energy. We also got some LED candles. Fire inside is BAD idea theater. And we have fire for outside. We get compliments ALL THE TIME on our tiki torches and globe light. They don't work so well is cloudy climates though... Like Oregon and Washington. LOL
7. Demolition
As we were more comfortable in our space, there were things that we wanted to customize even further than it's original design. My favorite was taking out panels that didn't make sense or use good space. Check out our post about DEMOLITION in our trailer.
8. Repairs That Make Life Easier, Not Harder
Two words: Flex Glue! This stuff has made repairs so simple that I'm wondering just how long they are going hold. The rabbit hole for RV repairs is deep. Don't make it any more difficult than necessary. There's going to be a LOT of them.
9. Updating When a Repair Needs To Be Done
When the nozzle on the faucet needed to be replaced, I updated with a rotating nozzle. Replace the crappy light duty brads/staples with nails or screws. Otherwise, you are just going to have to repair it more frequently.
10. Fun Stuff
Whenever I get an Amazon gift card I splurge a little on the fun stuff. Things like a flag pole with lights, or a personalized tire cover. Even our license plate cover got an update from free marketing for the RV dealer, to one of my favorite quotes from the series "Firefly."
I know it seems like a lot, as most of this does when you are first getting started... But, I guarantee that one of your favorite things about RVing will be talking to other people about their cool shit and making your shit cooler.
